Army gunning for first Sarawak Cup title as defending champs Kuching wait in final

MIRI: Defending champions Kuching are set to face-off with Armed Forces (ATM) in a highly anticipated battle for supremacy in the final of the 2012 Sarawak Cup here today.

Unbeaten ATM will be gunning for their first title and are set to troop into the field today as the team to beat.

Kuching did well in the semi-finals to defeat the highly rated Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) 2-0 to advance into the finals.

It was indeed a fiery encounter at the Lutong Petroleum Recreational Club field yesterday as PDRM had to play with only nine players at the final whistle.

THE FINALISTS: Defending champions Kuching

Limbang’s fairy tale run in the competition finally burst when they were thrashed 4-1 by ATM in the other semi-final yesterday.

The northerners were no match for the soldiers as they were under siege and lived dangerously throughout the entire game.

ATM’s team manager Lt Col Jamaluddin Yaakob told thesundaypost yesterday that he was satisfied with his team’s performance and hoped they can continue to perform well in today’s final.

“This is a history for us. We’ve been dreaming for so long to be in the final. Finally we are able to compete against defending champions Kuching in tomorrow’s (today) final,” he said.

It is interesting to note that ATM is yet to be defeated in the competition.

The final match will be held at the Miri Stadium at 3.15pm today.

In another development, Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) held an Annual General Meeting yesterday morning in Miri.

One of the important points of the meeting is to select the new FAS Excos for 2012/ 2014.

All past Excos were retained except for Posa Majais who withdrew himself due to other commitments. He was replaced by Abdillah Adam, the Sarawak Director of Education.

Among the Excos retained are president Datu Sudarsono Osman, his deputy Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, vice-presidents Nelson Kloni Kanang, Ismail @ Razali Dolhan, Haidel Heli, Sazali Abdul Rahman, secretary-general Abdullah Julaihi and treasurer Aris Nasrul Osman.
