YAN: Fishing boats must be equipped with life jackets and lifebuoys failing which their licence will be suspended for six montsh if caught by the authorities, said Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry deputy minister, Datuk Mohd Johari Baharom.

He said the government had enforced the ruling since early this year and it had been proven these safety equipment saved lives.

“The life jacket can only last about six hours at sea, so fishermen must also have lifebuoys in case the jackets do not work,” he told reporters after  handing over boat licences and life jackets to Yan fishermen at the  Malaysia Fisheries Development Authority’s premises in Sungai Udang here yesterday.

The Kubang Pasu parliament member said there were still huge numbers of fishermen who neglected the safety ruling. — Bernama
