Malaysian delegation to Cannes led by Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture

KUALA LUMPUR: The Secretary General of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf is leading the Malaysian delegation to MIPCOM this year, held from Oct 8 to Oct 11, in Cannes, France.

MIPCOM is a global market for entertainment content across all platforms.

This year, the Malaysian delegation will comprise more than 40 strong Malaysian content companies consisting of broadcasters, distributors, feature film, television and animation producers.

The Malaysian contingent will come prepared with 200 new programmes in its catalogue to be offered for distribution and acquisition for the global market, which is double the number of completed programmes offered last year.

“Since the Malaysian government has identified the creative content industry as a high impact economic growth area to its gross domestic product, the commitment and support from the government and financial institutions have gradually risen on an annual basis,” said Kamaruddin in a statement yesterday.

He added that Creative Malaysia has certainly proven to the world that its creative economy and ecosystem have one of the best synergies to accelerate growth in content development.

He said that the growth in content development was complemented by various funding and incentives, leading-edge studio facilities, strong creative talents, culturally-adapt multi-racial society, supportive government and a competitive economy.

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) director-general, Mohd Naguib Razak said the delegation’s main focus this year in MIPCOM will be to aggressively sell programmes and encourage more international co-production projects and promote Malaysia as an attractive filming location.

“In order to stay competitive in the global market, Malaysia has to persistently participate in major markets such as MIPCOM, in search of international partners and projects,” he said.

During MIPCOM 2012, Malaysia is expected to close and make an announcement for a number of prominent deals during Malaysia’s Networking Reception on day one, hosted by Kamaruddin.

In regards to its expected outcome for MIPCOM, Malaysia targets to achieve deals worth over US$20 million (RM60 million). — Bernama
