Quality leadership in sports association important, says Sports Commissioner

BINTULU: Leadership quality is one of the most important input factors that can inspire greater success and achievement of every sports associations or clubs.The state sports’ Commissioner Lamat Nyalau thus urged all members of sports association’s committee to give and contribute ideas to further improve the association that they represented.

“All leaders of sports bodies, whether at the divisional or club level must be more efficient and effective in order to enhance their roles in the development of sports at the grassroots level.

“Nurture the young and talented athletes to represent Bintulu Division in any kind of sports which will later open up better opportunity to represent the state,” Lamat said when officiating at the sports body management workshop for Bintulu Division recently.

A total of 25 leaders of sports bodies here took part in the workshop which was organised by the Sarawak Sports Commissioner’s Office specifically to the new sports body registered under the Sports Development Act 1997.

While naming the names of big athletes that has proudly represented the country in the international level competitions such as Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Datuk Nicol Ann David and Pandelela Rinong Pamg, he said their achievements should inspire the younger generation to become just like one of them or even better.

“The success of our national sports icons clearly shows that sports is an area that can be made as a good career as practiced in other developed countries,” said Lamat.

He added sports should become a culture and leaders should not only focus on high performance sports but also promotes mass sports which comprises fitness and health.

“Many diseases can be avoided by engaging in regular recreational and fitness activities,” he said.

At the same time the participants of the workshop was urged to understand the concept of good governance so that they can have better governance of the sports bodies they represented.

This effective governance he said will contribute to the development of sports in the state and country as a whole.

“Leaders of sports bodies should be in the forefront in implementing the direction of the development of sports in the state,” Lamat pointed.

He also challenged sports leaders in the division to make Bintulu as one of the producers of quality athletes for the country.

Among the objective of the workshop was to give better understanding on the Sports Development Act 1997 which would be vital for them to understanding the constitutions of their respective associations or clubs.

It was also hoped that the participants would be in better position to fully understand their real responsibilities as leaders of their associations in relation to the management of meetings and administrative procedures.

This, Lamat said is the essence of the success for every sports body to produce quality athletes that are able to compete internationally.

He on the other hand thanked the sports bodies here for having registered with the State Sports Commissioner’s Office.

“With the registration, it would be easier for us to regulate and organise sports-related activities,” he added.
