Cleaner denies handphone theft charge

KOTA KINABALU: The magistrate’s court yesterday set Nov 19, this year for the trial of a cleaner charged with stealing a handphone.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus set the trial date for Ibrahim Absara, 25, after he changed his guilty plea to one of not guilty when the case came up for sentencing.

The accused had on Oct 5, pleaded guilty to the charge but the sentencing was deferred to yesterday pending the tendering of the victim impact statement.

Ibrahim is accused of stealing a Samsung smart handphone worth RM1,600 belonging to a 25-year-old woman at the Golden Screen Cinema in Suria Sabah about 1am on Sept 30, this year.

He is liable to a jail term of up to 10 years and is also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Prosecuting officers Inspector Azaman Hamat and Inspector Syahrin Ali prosecuted.
