‘Islamic medicine practitioner’ denies seducing woman to commit illicit sex

SEREMBAN: A man who claimed to be an Islamic medicine practitioner pleaded not guilty in two Syariah courts here yesterday to four charges, namely for insulting Islam, conducting a marriage solemnisation which contradicts Islamic teachings, misusing the Quranic verses and attempting to commit illicit sex.

At the Syariah High Court, Mohamad Sombhas Abdullah, 48, pleaded not guilty to three of the charges before Syariah judge Abu Zaky Mohamad.

The charges are for insulting Islam by conducting a spiritual marriage ceremony, misusing the Quran by using the holy book in a marriage which contradicts Islamic teachings and conducting a marriage solemnisation which contradicts Islamic teachings.

All the offences were allegedly committed at a house in Kampung LBJ, Labu near here on Sept 17 this year.

The charges are made under Section 50, 49 and 52, respectively, of the Negeri Sembilan Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992 which provides a fine of RM5,000 or three years’ jail on each count, if found guilty.

Judge Abu Zaky maintained bail at RM4,000 with two sureties, comprising public servants, on each charge and set Nov 2 to hear the case.

Syariah deputy public prosecutors Abdul Razak Nayan and Salmi Amalia Jamil prosecuted.

Meanwhile, in the Lower Syariah Court, Mohamad Sombhas was charged with seducing a woman with intention to commit illicit sex with her at the same place and time.

The charge, under Section 77 of the same enactment, carries a maximum imprisonment for two years or fine of RM3,000, upon conviction.

Syariah judge Hamizan Mohd Nor maintained Mohamad Sombhas’ bail at RM3,000 with two public servants as sureties and set Nov 2 to hear the case.

Syariah deputy public prosecutor Salmi Amalia Jamil prosecuted, while lawyer Hanif Hassan represented Mohamad Sombhas. — Bernama
