IGNITING PASSION FOR LEARNING: Students at the campus of James Cook University in Singapore.

KUCHING: James Cook University (JCU) is Queensland’s second oldest university and was established in Townsville in 1970 to be Australia’s ‘University for the Tropics’.

To date, JCU has developed into a tri-city university with major campuses in Townsville, Cairns and world class city state of Singapore.

“The model we follow is ‘one university, two countries, three campuses’,” said JCU vice-chancellor and president Professor Sandra Harding.

JCU stood true to their dedication and made it to the top 4 per cent universities in the world for academic and research performance (based on The Academic Ranking of World Universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 2011).

“At JCU, our students are the heart of our organisation and our aim is to ignite and support their passion for learning and provide them with a truly Australian experience,” said Sandra.

Backed with the same quality and standards of JCU Australia, JCU Singapore delivered the same courses catered in Australian campuses.

Namely, the recently introduced Accounting major for their Bachelor of Business programme is fully accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) allowing JCU graduates to practise in both countries upon completion.

“We are always confident of the quality of our programmes. This ranking is a public statement of what we already know. I am sure that our academics, students and graduates are proud of this and will continue their good work,” said JCU Singapore CEO Dr Dale Anderson, when it was ranked in the top 200 in the QS World University Rankings for their Psychology programme.

JCU places great emphasis on employing credible and highly qualified lecturers.

Full-time lecturers are all required to have at least a PhD.

By way of showing the university’s commitment to research, Sandra noted that JCU had pumped an initial $500,000 into setting up laboratories, bringing in a research dean and hiring researchers for its Singapore campus.
