KUCHING: The election of Robert Lu as a vice president (for East Malaysia) of the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) last Sunday did not come as a surprise to Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (Abas).

Lu replaced MTBC vice president Maradona Chok who was elected as a council member.

Abas president Sunny Si was very happy for Lu being given the post as Lu was very qualified for the job.

“He has been involved in bowling for the past 14 years and knows the administration and the game very well. He has been a founding member of Abas, a treasurer, a secretary and a vice president of Abas since 2010,” he said yesterday.

“Lu has also been a coach and team manager for our Sukma teams and managed the national team at the Asian School Championship, and has been involved in bowling since 1988.”

Si said with all that experience, it came as no surprise that Lu was nominated by the delegates from other states.

“Having being a MTBC vice president myself before, I know this is no easy job but I am very sure with his experience, commitment, dedication and passion for the game, he can do his job well,” Si said of Lu’s capability.

“Lu is well respected and commands a strong presence with officials of other state affiliates, so he will be a very good ambassador for Sarawak at the MTBC,” he added.

“I have been involved in bowling for such a long time and I should be there to contribute and I will strive to do my part of this part of Malaysia and look after the bowlers from Sabah, Labuan and Sarawak,” said Lu.

Now attached with a bowling centre in Brunei and running a youth development programme there, Lu said he would now be in good stead to inform the national body on bowling developments in Borneo.

In the MTBC annual general meeting cum elections last Sunday, 79-year-old Dr PS Nathan was returned as the president for the 19th term while Tan Sri Mohd Noor Rahim is the deputy president.

Other vice presidents include Cheah Ban Cheng (Northern), Kenny Yap (East Coast), Mazlan Mohd Said (Central South) and Salim Muda (Central South).

The treasurer is George Tan who is assisted by Mohd Hisham while Sydney Tung is re-elected as the secretary, assisted by YK Choo.

Other council members are Steven Teng and Michelle Wong (Kuala Lumpur), Roliah Harun (Penang), Abdullah Rahman (Terengganu) and Kamal Arifin (Pahang).
