KUALA LUMPUR: Maid abuse victim Nirmala Bonat of Indonesia and her former employers yesterday failed to reach settlement of a suit filed by Nirmala seeking damages for pain and suffering.

Nirmala’s lawyer, M Kavimani, told reporters that her client and her former employers, Yim Pek Ha and husband Hii Ik Ting, did not agree to the proposed terms of a solution and would proceed to trial in the High Court.

She said Judge Zainal L Salleh (rpt) Zainal L Salleh, who heard the mediation proceedings in chambers, also set Oct 24 for case management. Nirmala was accompanied by a representative of the Indonesian embassy while Hii was accompanied by his lawyer, Gurmeet Singh.

Nirmala, 28, filed the suit at the High Court registry on Jan 28, 2010, naming both Yim and Hii as the first and second defendants.

In her statement of claim, Nirmala stated that she was employed by the couple, residing at Villa Putera, Jalan Tun
Ismail here, in September 2003.

She claimed that during her employment at the couple’s residence, she was abused and injured several times by Yim, including with a hot iron in January 2004.

She also claimed that Hii failed to stop his wife from injuring her as well as to provide her the necessary medical treatment for her injuries. — Bernama
