SIBU: Royal Malaysia Police are targeting to recruit 10,000 salary based police volunteers throughout the nation as the second phase of the National Key Result Area (NKRA).

Police management director from Bukit Aman, Datuk Mortadza Nazarene said the emphasis is on managing public perception on their safety, adding the first phase of NKRA was focused on reducing crime index.

“We want to increase public perception on their safety and lift their confidence to live harmoniously,” he said when visiting the police volunteer reserve recruitment exercise at the Police HQ here yesterday morning.

He said the effort was in line with the police motto and commitment.

He also said criminal cases in the nation had been reduced from 20 per cent to five per cent.

“This is NKRA’s target and we want to ensure the country is safe to live in.”

Mortadza was quoted as saying, “Malaysia is one of the safest countries in the world record.”

The uniformed police volunteer reserve, he said, would help police and NKRA personnel to reduce the crime rate.

He said they had as much power as the police when they were on duty.

Mortadza said the recruitment was targeting the members of the public, teachers and members of organisations.

“We are targeting those people to work part time,” he said, adding that the job was dependent on availability.

He said PDRM would enrol 900 recruits for police volunteer reserve in Sarawak.

“So far, we have received overwhelming response from the public on the recruitment.”

Mortadza said the new police volunteers would have to undergo a one-week basic training in Kuching and later on the job training with the police.

Meanwhile, he said government had granted RM10,000 to each residents’ association in safeguarding the residents.

Among those accompanying Mortadza were Sibu police chief ACP Shafie Ismail and head of special branch Dely Beng.
