Samur forecast to receive 10 pct of investment annually

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Ammonia Urea (Samur) project in Sipitang is projected to receive about 10 per cent of the total investment of RM4.5 billion annually.

Sabah Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah said at present, the significant economic spillover from the project is an increase in land prices, while rental for single-storey houses now reach between RM2,400 to RM3,500 monthly.

“Apart from that, an indirect increase in the number of jobs through the project, has improved the income of foodstall operators, fishermen and other businessmen,” he added.

Tan was replying to a question from Datuk Samsudin Yahya (Umno-Sekong) in the Sabah State Assembly here yesterday.

He said the main activity being undertaken at the Samur site was landworks to level the place as well as construction of the plant.

He said the development plan for the Samur plant had been approved by the Sipitang District Council in June.

Tan said basic landworks had been completed with civil engineering initiatives now taking place, including temporary accommodation for the Samur workers as well as construction of a jetty.

“To date, 222 Sabahans are undergoing training for the project.Of this number, 100 are attending classroom theoretical training with three others placed at the Samur liaison office in Kota Kinabalu,” he added. — Bernama
