Four months’ jail for stealing from Sesco sub-station

KUCHING: A man from Siburan was sentenced to four months’ jail yesterday after he pleaded guilty to stealing metal fences and rods from a Sesco sub-station at the old Kuching-Serian road five years ago.

Bong Fook Sen from Siburan admitted committing the offence at the substation at the Kampung Maang junction about 1.40am on July 22, 2008.

The estimated value of the items was RM3,500.

The brief fact of case stated that the caretaker of the sub-station was patrolling the nearby areas when he spotted a man attempting to enter into the area.

The caretaker, who is also the complainant, called his five friends, and together they managed to arrest the suspect and handed him over to the police.

Magistrate Maris Agan convicted the accused under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Inspector Yunus Sahak prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.

In another Magistrates’ Court, an Indonesian man was ordered to be deported to his country of origin after he was discharged and acquitted of two counts of drug-related charges.

Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng ordered Ambok Asek, a 35-year-old driver, to be freed after she ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove prima facie case against him (Ambok).

The order to deport him was made as his travel document had expired.

Ambok faced two charges, first for  allegedly   possessing  32.32g of methamphetamine at a terminal bus here about 6pm on March 1.

For the second charge, he allegedly consumed the same drug at 7.05pm of the same day when he was brought to the police headquarters for investigation.

Drug possession charge comes under Section 12(2) of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same act which carries a life jail sentence and whipping upon conviction.

Self-administration of drugs comes under Section 15(1)(a) of the same act and the offender is liable to a fine not exceeding RM5, 000 or to imprisonment term not exceeding two years.
