KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia Airports has conducted an aircraft crash practice at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to test and evaluate the effectiveness of the Airport Emergency Procedure (AEP) for aircraft emergencies.

KKIA’s senior airport manager Kamaruzzaman Razali said the practice was to ensure that all agencies at the airport were always well prepared in case of an aircraft crash.

Apart from that, he said, it was also intended to test the response of other support agencies in handling aircraft crash emergencies.

“The practice started at 10.50pm and ended shortly after midnight.

All parties concerned, especially the airport management and staff, as well as 70 volunteers who acted as casualties were involved in this practice,” he told reporters when met at the KKIA, here, Tuesday night.

He said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad thanked all agencies which participated in the exercise and hoped this exercise would equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge required to handle such incidents.

“This practice is also in compliance with the International Civil Aviatioan Organisation (ICAO) and Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) requirement for all aiports in Malaysia to conduct a full-scale crash practice once every two years.”     Kamaruzzaman said apart from the full-scale practice, airports were also required to conduct an annual Emergency Evacuation Exercise at the terminal buildings. — Bernama
