Chia, Shaaban hope for better outing in CIMB Classic

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s professional golfers, Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin, are going to keep things simple as they aim for a better outing in the final round of the 2012 CIMB Classic.

Chia and Shaaban, who shot a 73 and 70, respectively, in the third round of the US$6.1 million (about RM19 million) event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and PGA Tour, are hoping for a final round spark to turn their fortunes around.

“I hit a lot of good drives but misjudged my second shots which cost me a lot of strokes. Obviously, I’m still trying to push myself to hole my putts but I didn’t get any luck on the green,” said Chia, who is playing in his second CIMB Classic.

For the final round today, he said he would take a carefree approach to boost his position.

“I’m still trying to play my best and recover a decent game. Right now, it isn’t very pretty to be at the bottom of the leaderboard. Hopefully, I can make a little bit of a comeback and finish under-par,” said Chia, who had a three-day total of one-over-par 214 for 45th position in the 48-man field.

Shaaban, who is still struggling with his left shoulder injury, was under-par for the first time this week and will rely on his short game to pull him up the rankings in the competition.

“My game was good. I didn’t do many mistakes but I didn’t get much distance on my ball. As long as I can get the ball on the fairway, I feel I have a chance of scoring. My short game was fantastic.

“My short game has to be really good tomorrow (today). I try to keep the ball before the green and do my best for an up-and-down. It worked for me and I’ll try to do the same on the final day,” he said. — Bernama
