Respecting elderly and motivating the young at function

SIBU: Tang Clan Association held a veneration of the elderly cum study incentives to presentation of outstanding students at Kingwood Hotel here recently.

The eldest in the association, a man and woman aged 91 and 100 respectively, were honoured with gifts including gold medals and ‘ang pau’.

Study incentives were given to a number of outstanding students who excelled in last year’s public examinations.

Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King who was guest-of-honour in his address touched on the parental role of the elderly.

Tiong said the function was to honour the elderly who had undergone trials and tribulations in life especially  in bringing up their children.

“They made sure their children had sound education which led to successful careers. Education is more important than money to be a well-rounded person.

“We should be thankful and appreciate our parents for what they have done and their invaluable contribution,” he said.

He advised students to study hard for a bright future and not forget what their parents had done for them.

Tiong said a large allocation was made for education in the yearly government  budget with no exception for the 2013 budget. The nation needs an educated pool of human capital.

At the function, karaoke singing and lucky draws were held to add merriment to the occasion.
