Cops to help curb cyber gambling

SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council would meet with the police next month to seek their cooperation in dealing with illegal cyber gambling.

Its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King Tiong, who is also Lanang MP, said the problem was a cause for concern not only to the public but the council too.

“I raised the matter during the parliamentary sitting recently, but there was no reply from the minister concerned,” he told the council monthly meeting here yesterday.

Deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng said illegal online gambling was “very disturbing” because its implications, among others, would lead to other social ills.

“It can cause family break-ups, and, worst, students are also involved in the activity.”

Ngieng hoped the authority would be more proactive to resolve the issue.

“We have expressed our concerns on various occasions to the police.”

Meanwhile, Tiong said the council had collected RM27.044 million, or 83.42 per cent, from assessment rates this year.

He said other rateable holdings situated within the jurisdiction of the council that had not settled their payments should do so on or before Oct 31 at Level 21 of Wisma Sanyan.

“One per cent surcharge per month or part thereof shall be imposed upon them without exception if they failed to settle the payment.”

On another matter, he directed all tyre shops to remove used tyres on five-foot-ways to prevent them from becoming Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

“Those who failed to do as directed could be compounded.”
