Syar’ie prosecutors visit Crime Scene Investigation Division

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A Group of officers and staff from the Syar’ie Prosecution Division, Islamic Legal Unit, Ministry of Religious Affairs, yesterday conducted an official visit to the Crime Scene Investigation Division, Criminal Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The division, headed by the Chief Syar’ie Prosecutor of Brunei Darussalam, Ustaz Hj Johar bin Hj Muhamad, were welcomed by the Head of Crime Scene Investigation Division, DSP Hj Justin bin Hj Yacob, and the Head of Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Insp Muhd Salim bin Abdullah Omping.

The visit was initiated by a brief presentation delivered by DSP Hj Justin followed by a question and-answer session amongst the two government agencies. This was later followed by a tour to take a closer look at the equipments used in conducting criminal investigations such as recovery of traces of body samples, lifting of fingerprints and footprints and collection of blood samples.

The Syar’ie Prosecution Division and the Crime Scene Investigation Department has been working close together especially in the process of collecting and handling blood samples for paternity DNA tests which will then be used as one of the primary evidence in illicit intercourse cases or ‘persetubuhan haram’. These cases fall under the jurisdiction of the Syariah Courts of Brunei Darussalam.
