KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Cabinet wants Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) to immediately resolve problems associated with the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), including that which triggered the recent blackout of its runway lights for two days.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the state cabinet also wanted MAB to take proactive steps to ensure such incidents did not recur.

He said the state government was ‘extremely concerned’ that the runway blackout had badly affected about 6,000 passengers.

“This is not good for the government, Sabah and certainly not good for MAB.

“I understand the blame cannot entirely be placed on MAB, but MAB should also have been more prepared in responding to such situations.

“Update those stranded and don’t leave them in the dark.

“At the very least, provide them with drinking water,” he added.

Musa was speaking during a state cabinet briefing on the KKIA runway blackout led by MAB chairman Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid and senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad at Wisma Innoprise near here yesterday.

Meanwhile, after the briefing on the cause and response to the incident, Bashir said, due to the malfunctioning lights, the KKIA runway had to be shut down due to safety reasons.

“MAB followed every procedure in responding to the incident.

“Nevertheless, we do apologise for not being able to respond fast enough,” he said.

He also assured the state cabinet that MAB would do its level best to rectify problems associated with the runway and any shortcoming at the KKIA.  — Bernama
