Fine outing for local keglers

KUCHING: Bowlers from Kuching City did reasonably well at the recent Asian Intercity Bowling Championship (AIBC) held in George Town, Penang.

They brought back one gold and four bronze medals from the week-long competition.

Team manager Kelvin Eng said the outcome of their outing was favourable considering they were up against some of the finest keglers in Asian region especially those from Paranaque, the Philippines.

“This is certainly a much better result when compared to last year where I finished among the top eight in the Men’s Open and Caroline Chien finished in the top 16 of the Women’s Open,” said Eng who is also Amateur Ten-pin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) treasurer.

The gold was delivered by Wagiman Kassim and Mohd Amran Mohd Saait in the Senior Men’s Doubles while the bronze medal winners were Maimunah Arshad and Ilyana Abdullah (Senior Women’s Doubles), Maimunah Arshad (Senior Women’s Masters), Maimunah, Ilyana, Wagiman and Amran (Senior Mixed Team) and Nurafidza Amran (Women’s Masters).

“AIBC is an annual tournament and also the one outing specifically organised by ABAS for the adult bowlers which include those aged 21 years old and above, and veteran bowlers aged 50 and above.

“We do our best to send a team every year. This is to ensure that the adult bowlers who have trained hard with their independent funding, have an international outlet to compete and strut their stuff as well as to build strong relationships with the other bowling fraternities from all over Asia,” said Eng.

“As the team manager for this trip, I can confidently say that our team has successfully put Kuching on the bowling Map, as far as AIBC is concern. We are looking forward to next year where Guam will play host,” he added.
