KOTA KINABALU: Police will carry out a thorough investigation into an explosion which ripped through a first floor unit at Grace Court Apartments in Sembulan here on Wednesday.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib yesterday said police were still waiting for a report from the Chemistry Department to determine what actually caused the explosion.

He said police would also investigate the background of both victims who were seriously injured in the incident.

“It is still too early to tell what actually happened, whether the explosion was an accident or an act of sabotage,” he said.

The 5am incident saw two brothers, Mu Kwang Hoe, 45 and Mu Khon Foo, 54, suffer serious injuries when what was believed to be a massive firecracker explosion ripped through the first floor unit at Grace Court Apartment and caused a fire on October 31.

Kwang Hoe was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) with third-degree burns all over his body, while his elder brother Khon Foo suffered burns on his hands and legs.

The explosion also ripped off window grilles and pieces of concrete, some of which came crashing down on five cars parked at the apartment, causing damaged to them.

It was said that the explosion was caused by firecrackers kept in the apartment unit occupied by the brothers as fragments of firecrackers were at the scene.
