Nov 20 hearing for man charged with selling baby

KUCHING: The Sessions Court yesterday adjourned the case management of a baby-selling case to Nov 20 after the case was mentioned yesterday.

Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong made the decision after the prosecutor applied for an adjournment in order to get a statement from the victim’s mother, who is placed under the women’s protection centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The accused, Hiu Kai Syang, represented by counsel Lim Lian Kee, was ordered to be released on extended bail pending the hearing of the case management.

Hiu, 51, allegedly attempted to sell a then three-day-old girl infant near an eatery in Batu Kawa at 6am last June 16.

He is being charged under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking In Persons Act and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants 2007 read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code and faces a penalty up to 20 years in jail and fine upon conviction.

The trial was fixed for Dec 12, 13 and 19.
