140 people detained in Tawau

TAWAU: One hundred and forty people were detained in a joint operation from October 13 to November 4 for various offences.

District police chief ACP Ibrahim Chin said 21 motorcycles, 170 packets of cooking oil, 390 packets of fine sugar, 203 contraband cigarettes of various brands, 1,260 health pills without tax and 49 bottles of alcohol of various brands were also seized.

“Many that were detained have no documents or have past criminal records,” he said yesterday.

He added out of the total detained, 36 were illegal immigrants while the others were locals and their age between 20 to 40.

Those roped in were 51 Indonesian men and 11 women, 23 Filipino men and six women and others were 11 men and two women while the rest were without documents.

Ibrahim said such operation would be carried from time to time to ensure that crime is under control.
