KUALA LUMPUR: MIFF Furniture Design Competition 2013 received a 30 per cent increase in participation in the young talent category to 187 entries compared with 128 entries last year.
The competition is held in conjunction with the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) 2013, which would be held from March 5-9 next year at the Putra World Trade centre and Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre.
MIFF managing director, Datuk Tan Chin Huat, said the competition is also widening its category with the introduction of a new contest entry, the open category, that allowed the participation of all Malaysians and foreign residents with authorised permits.
“This contest will be a platform for talents to showcase their creativities and innovativeness in furniture design,” he said to reporters at the design competition semi-finals judging ceremony, here yesterday.
“It will create an opportunity for them to enhance their skills and at the same time sustaining the identity of Malaysian culture through their furniture designs,” Tan said.
He said this year’s participation from Malaysia showed an improvement in furniture design that were far more unique and reached acceptable standards. The open category offered total prizes of up to RM27,500, including trophy and certificate, while the young talent category offered total prizes of up to RM17,500 with trophy and certificate. The prototypes of the top 10 best entries would be exhibited at MIFF 2013.
The winner of the final round would be announced on March 7, 2013, during the MIFF 2013 prize presentation. — Bernama
