KUCHING: Sadi Rambli was in his element at the Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) yesterday as he fired a commendable four under to top the nett event of the Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip Golf Challenge Trophy.

GO FOR IT: Khairil Ezanee tees off during the first day of the SEDC Chairman Cup yesterday. Some 100 top local golfers are in the fray today for the champion’s title.

He heads into the second day of the tournament today with closest rival Khairil Ezanee close on his tail.

Seasoned golfer Othman Zen is another close adversary on third in the leader board that could overtake Sadi as a stellar cast of top local golfers join the quest for top honours of the prestigious event at the Arnold Palmer designed course today.

“Play condition on day one was ideal with bright sunshine and light breezes from the South China Sea. The competitors played on the all-new Greens of the recently completed upgrading works on the Ocean Nine. This made this year’s competition more challenging,” said general manager of DGCC Zulkifli Othman.

In the gross event, Rashid Bakar is heading the leader board followed by Sai’dun Said and Kenny Law.

Defending champion Herman Bulang steps into the Greens today and looks likely to have a tough fight in his hands in his bid to retain the title.

Among top local golfers in action today are single handicappers Albert Tanon (8), Saferi Ali (9), Awang Madzelan Awang Bakeri (8) and Japar Mustapha (9). Among the players to watch are seasoned campaigners Sukiman Aini (10), Othman Abdul Rani (14), Mohamad Mokarat (13), Johnny Satur (11) and Jubing Bujing (11).

“Today’s tee-off starts at 7.30am, on stroke play over 18-holes with nett over gross except for Overall Champion on best gross score,” informed Zulkifli.

The competition resumes today with a number of high-profile names and players scheduled to play.
