3 killed as lorry rams into parked trailer

KUNAK, Sabah: Three people were killed and four hurt in an accident involving a lorry and a parked trailer at KM20 Jalan Kunak-Lahad Datu on Saturday.

The victims were returning from a funeral at the Lor Malung Muslim cemetery, near here, when the incident took place at 4.40pm.

Kunak acting police chief ASP Wee Devets Tan said the identities of the victims had yet to be ascertained.

He said the lorry, driven by a man in his 30s, was heading towards Lahad Datu when the vehicle went out of control at KM20 near the Madai Recreation Centre.

“It rammed the back of a stationary trailer by the side of the road and skidded on the road shoulder throwing out its passengers,” he said in a statement, here, yesterday.

He said a passenger died at the scene and two other passengers died at the Kunak Hospital.

Four others, including the driver and a heavily pregnant woman are being treated at Kunak and Tawau hospitals.  The driver of the trailer was unhurt.

Wee said all the victims, aged between 30 and 60, worked at a palm oil plantation in the Sabahan area, bordering the Lahad Datu district. — Bernama
