ON TOP OF THE GAME: Sarawak Firehorse’s Devon Joshua Sullivan score a two-pointer for his team against Farmchochem on Saturday night at Miri Indoor Stadium.

MIRI: Defending champion Sarawak Firehorse (SFH) continues to shine with their impressive performance in the on-going Malaysian National Basketball League (MNBL) with a win over Farmchochem 83-71 at Miri Indoor Stadium on Saturday night.

Led by skipper Yiek Chai Teck, Firehorse were tied 36-36 at the end of first half and managed to downturn Farmchochem in the second half, thanks to the vocal support from hundreds of Mirians who turned out at the stadium that night.

Anthony Gene Johnson of Firehorse became the team’s top scorer, contributing 25 points with some of it through slam dunk moves.

Last month, Sarawak Firehorse’s president James Ling told reporters that it would be a difficult task to defend the champion title with four strong teams vying for top honours.

However, with the help of two import players who are top in the sports, it would not be impossible for SFH to emerge champion again this year.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin who officiated at the opening ceremony of the MNBL on Saturday night congratulated the organiser for their strong support and enthusiasm for making the event a success.

“This tournament is indeed a very good way to promote basketball among Mirians, and open more opportunities for basketball to grow and raise its standard,” he said.
