Young talents reap benefits from Soccer Kids programme

YOUNG AND TALENTED: Participants show off their talent and skills after one-year training at MBM field yesterday.

MIRI: The Miri Soccer Kids (MSK) programme which started about two years ago is finally showing results with tremendous improvement seen on the participants in various aspects of football skills.

“We started from scratch. These kids knew nothing about football when they first join MSK, but today, I am more than happy to see how much they have grown in this field,” said Miri Football Association chairman, Harifen Mansor.

Harifen revealed that the kids, all below 12-years-old are eager learners and willing to learn football and to polish their skills and talent.

He was speaking at the prize-giving ceremony to about 40 MSK participants at Miri City Council (MCC) field here yesterday.

“We have coaches who train and motivate them. There are five coaches involve in this programme, which are willing to teach these kids based on their experiences they had over the years,” Harifen added.

On the MSK, Harifen said that it was a development programme under the State Sports Council (MSNS) that aims to tap new young talent through early and intensive trainings.

“They have their trainings every weekend here (at MMC field) with only RM30 fees per month. The fees we collected will be given to coaches as allowance,” Harifen revealed.

There are three primary schools in Miri which has been identified under the development programme by MSNS. The schools are SK Merbau, SK Anchi and SK Kuala Baram 2.
