SDNU, PSC open registration roadshow

KUCHING: Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) in collaboration with the Public Services Commission (PSC) will hold an open registration roadshow beginning Nov 15 to attract Dayaks to participate in the state federal civil service sector.

The first leg of the roadshow to be held at the Pakan Community Hall, Saratok, has targeted to register some 1,000 natives in the job application database of the PSC.

SDNU vice-president (I) Anthony Banyan yesterday said the event will be in collaboration with various Dayak non governmental organisations (NGOs).

The main objective was to assist as many Dayak youths to apply for government jobs through the PSC open counter.

Adding that the roadshow can be considered more of an outreach programme, he explained that part of the programme was held to ensure the native communities and SDNU members in particular understand government policies.

“One of the main objectives of this outreach programme is to conduct a fact finding mission to get feedback from the ground with regards to problems often faced by the rural Dayak communities such as education and economic development and job application through PSC among others.

“We will try our best to achieve the target of registering about 100,000 Dayaks in the SPA database by Dec 31,” he highlighted when met by The Borneo Post here.

The SDNU initiated programme is led by a special committee comprising leaders representing various Dayak NGOs.

The chairman of the special committee is Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) president Dr Dusit Jaul.

Advisors of the committee are SDNU president Tan Sri William Mawan who is also Social Development Minister and SDNU deputy president Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.

These appointments have been approved by PSC chairman Tan Sri Mahmood Adam.

When commenting on the lack of Dayaks working in the civil service sector,  Anthony explained that many of the natives living in the rural areas were not aware of the available opportunities.

“The inability to use the internet, lack of facilities and also the attitude of not being bothered with the going-on of others in the village could be the contributing factors to this lack of application and awareness. Some of them who did apply, gave up on trying again after failing to get a job placement,” he continued.

Anthony highlighted that the registration process of the applicants in Pakan will be updated into the commission database on the spot.

At PSC forum with various Dayak NGOs recently, SDNU requested for Mahmood to open more opportunities for the Dayaks to fill in available positions in the state federal civil service sector.

After Pakan, SDNU is planning to hold this outreach programme in all its branch areas such as Kapit, Song, Betong, Sri Aman, Saratok, Lubok Antu, Sarikei, Bintangor, Julau, Kanowit, Machan, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.

Betong, Kanowit and Kapit respective MPs Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas, Aaron Ago Dagang and Nanta have confirmed their participation in the programme at their respective constituencies.

On Nov 16, the roadshow will head to Sri Aman.

Dates for other scheduled events will be announced soon.
