KUCHING: A man was arrested by police yesterday afternoon in connection with the theft of a box of electronic cigarettes after the incident was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV).

Police tracked down the 30-year-old suspect to his house at Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar after analysing footage from the CCTV, which showed the thief driving off from the scene of the crime.

According to a source, the incident occurred on Tuesday at the carpark of Wisma Saberkas when the suspect noticed a Perodua Kenari belonging to a vendor had been left unlocked.

He then opened the boot and stole a box containing over 10 units of electronic cigarettes before making his escape.

Upon realising the theft, the vendor requested for the CCTV footage and subsequently handed it over to the police for investigation.

In addition to recovering the stolen merchandise belonging to the vendor, police also found over 20 mobile phones, two LCD monitors and a camera tripod at the suspect’s house.

The suspect, who could not explain how the rest of the items came into his possession, has been detained for further investigation.
