SIBU: The creation of an affluent society may spell bad news for the environment, said Temenggong Vincent Lau who yesterday called for a more concerted effort to protect the environment.

He said people globally were chasing after comfortable lifestyles to the extent of unwittingly destructing the environment.

All quarters, including the non-governmental organisations, should hence do more to help protect Mother Earth.

Speaking when officiating at the opening of a competition on ‘Recyclable Items Decorations’ yesterday at the 1Malaysia Cultural Village, Lau said the recent spate of natural calamities were a grave cause for concern.

“The climate globally has changed because of gradual destruction to the environment,” he noted.

He praised the Women’s wing of the World Foochow Association for rolling out the competition, and hoped to see more such activities coming up.

Activities as such would help heighten awareness of the need for everyone to do their part to help protect the environment, he said.

The competition yesterday received 50 entries from Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu.

It was divided into three categories — Foochow Association category, Secondary Schools category and Open category.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same function, a councillor of Sibu Municipal Council, Chieng Buong Toon, said the council had done much to get people to be involved in environment protection effort.

“The council can’t do this alone.

“We need the non-governmental organisations, the schools, the corporate sector and so on to complement our effort,” he said.

Among those present at the function were World Foochow Women’s chief Yong Lik Yien, council secretary Hii Chang Kee and the competition sponsor Penghulu Law Buong Wu.
