LAWAS: Muslims in the state should welcome the new year of Hijrah with the determination to improve themselves and use past challenges as benchmark.

“This will enable us to face future challenges which are more complex with great confidence,” said Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan at a Quran recital ceremony held in conjunction with the Maal Hijrah celebration at Darul Ma’amur Mosque here Wednesday evening.

Among those present were Lawas District Officer Mohd Supaih Hamdan and local community leaders.

Awang Tengah said that moderate approach and steely determination to overcome challenges by Muslims would be befitting the teachings of Islam.

Calling on Muslims to pursue knowledge to keep pace with changes in this modern world, he said: “There is no period in the quest for knowledge as advocated by the Quran which contains knowledge of this world and hereafter.”

Awang Tengah, who is also Bukit Sari assemblyman, praised Muslims here for taking up the Quran recital to enable them to understand the Islamic teaching better.

“This would help create better understanding among Muslims and mutual respect among themselves and with non-Muslims,” he said.

Later, he joined the congregation for the ‘doa’, a religious talk conducted by Ustaz Sarip Adol from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and Maghrib and Isyak prayers to welcome the New Year. Fifty-three adult Muslims led by Ustaz Ali Aliakbar Hafiz Mohamed took part in the Quran recital to usher in Maal Hijrah 1434.
