Build air force base to prevent criminals from escaping – Nasrun

LAHAD DATU: Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur, said the government should consider building an air force base in the district to stop criminals from escaping to a neighbouring country.

Nasrun said the construction of an air force base was a long-term precautionary measure that should seriously be considered by the government following the abduction of a manager and his assistant at Bandar Baiduri Ayu here on Wednesday.

“For now, the government must immediately beef up its security personnel in the area,” he said when asked to comment on the abduction of the cousins.

According to Nasrun, he was greatly shocked by the incident. He said such incident that involved foreign criminals who could enter and exit the state with such ease should not happen in Lahad Datu, where various security forces are supposed to actively protect the coast lines.

Nasrun said such incident would also discourage potential investors from investing in Lahad Datu as well as the tourism industries.

“It has been a long time since the last time such an incident had occurred along our coastlines but we don’t seem to learn from the lesson.

“The various security agencies must seriously review their strategies in protecting and guarding the coastlines,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, people in the district are asked to remain calm and not to worry about their safety.

Silam member of parliament Dr Salleh Kalbi said he believed the national security forces would be able to solve the case.

“I was informed that they (security forces) are conducting further investigation on the case and I believe the case will be solved,” said Salleh, adding he hoped no parties would manipulate the issue for personal interest.
