Detainee pleads not guilty to escaping from police custody, hurting policemen

KUANTAN: A detainee who escaped from police custody pleaded not guilty in the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday to a charge of causing grievous hurt on three policemen who were escorting him last September.

Ruslan Ismail, 32, also pleaded not guilty to a charge of escaping from police custody on that day.

According to the charge, Ruslan, a worker at the Felda Bukit Bading oil palm plantation in Ajil, Terengganu, is alleged to have voluntarily caused grievous hurt on Corporal Abdul Rashid Ahmad, 51, Constable Zuhairi Ramli, 24, and Lance Corporal Filyx Ian Saver Jindu, 25, while the policemen were performing their duty.

He is also charged with escaping from the custody of Abdul Rashid Ahmad while they were being taken to the Penor Prison where Ruslan was sent to serve time for a drug-related offence.

Both the offences were allegedly committed at the Jalan Kuantan Bypass, near Taman Datuk Rashid here at 11.45am last Sept 18 when the police patrol car they were travelling in was involved in an accident.

Ruslan was rearrested the same day when he came out of hiding and went to ask for a drink at a house in Taman Dato Rashid.

Senior Assistant Registrar Jesseca Daimis set Dec 6 for pre-conference of the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Farahah Mohd Nazari, who prosecuted, did not offer bail for fear that the accused would attempt to escape again. — Bernama
