Man gets six months’ jail time for stealing aluminium pieces from government office

KUCHING: A man was sentenced to six months’ jail after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrates’ Court to stealing aluminium pieces from the Ministry of Planning and Resource Management Office at Baitul Makmur building early this month.

Awang Shiddieqy Awang Sapiee, 27, from Kampung Malaysia Jaya was guilty of stealing the aluminium pieces from the eighth floor of Baitul Makmur at Masja, belonging to Planning and Resources Management Ministry between 9pm and 9.30pm on Nov 2.

The brief facts of the case stated the accused had carried all the aluminium out from the level, using the VIP escalator from the eight floor to the basement.

The security guard who is also the complainant said he saw the accused going up and down the building on the escalator around 9pm.

He later told his superior he found something amiss with the behaviour of the suspect known to him as one of the staff working in the building.

Following the report, the suspect known as Shiddieqy was arrested on Monday.

Upon appearing in court for the mention of his case yesterday, he pleaded guilty to theft in a dwelling house.

Magistrate Maris Agan ordered the jail sentence to take effect immediately.

Inspector Yunus Sahak prosecuted while the accused was not represented by any lawyer.

In the same court room, a man claimed trial to causing grievous hurt to a man and theft.

The 41-year-old Raduan Mos from Tabuan Melayu pleaded not guilty to causing hurt to Teng Chee Kiong with a penknife at Everrise at Demak Laut at about 2.49pm on Oct 4.

He was also accused of stealing eight bottles of Rejoice shampoo at the same place, day and time.

Causing grievous hurt comes under Section 324 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum imprisonment of three years or fine, or whipping on conviction. While theft provides under Section 380 of the Penal Code a penalty up to 10 years’ imprisonment and also liable to a fine.

Prior to yesterday, he was placed on a month’s psychiatric observation upon instruction from the prosecution officer.

At yesterday’s appearance, the doctor verified that he is fit to stand trial and his plea was taken. The trial was adjourned to Nov 22.

Raduan was unrepresented while Inspector Austin Patrick Angkon prosecuted.
