KOTA KINABALU: To combat drug smuggling activities, a beeline system equipped with seven scanners at the KL International Airport (KLIA) will be ready by early January.

Customs Department deputy director-general (enforcement and compliance) Datuk Matrang Suhaili said this was to increase surveillance on drug smuggling activities at the KLIA.

“KLIA currently has three scanning systems, and four more are needed to complete the system which will inspect each passenger entering KLIA, in a more effective and organised manner, as well as curb drug trafficking at airport entrances,” he told a news conference at the state customs department here Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Matrang said the department had, as of Nov 7, solved 97 cases and detained 117 suspects nationwide to facilitate investigations into smuggling of drugs worth about RM146.5 million. –Bernama
