Two charged in shooting incident

SARIKEI: Two men involved in a fatal accidental shooting during a hunting trip in the jungle of Julau near here over three weeks ago were charged in the magistrate’s court here yesterday.

Jemat Aking, 46, faced two charges under Section 304 of the Penal Code and 8(a) of Firearms Act 1960 while Ujang Ludan, 22, faced a charge framed under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960.

For the first count, Jemat from Rumah Panting, Ulu Pasi, Julau was charged with homicide under Section 304A of the Penal Code when around 6.30pm on Sept 26 he accidentally shot to death his colleague, Tedong Lamba, 49, during a hunting trip in the jungle of Julau.

The charge carries a jail term, a fine or both upon conviction in court.

For the second count, Jemat was charged with possession of a homemade shotgun without valid firearm ownership and usage licence under Section 8(a) of Firearms Act 1960 which carries a jail term up to seven years, a fine of up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction.

Ujang was charged under Section 8(a) of Firearms Act 1960 for possession of a shotgun without valid ownership and usage of firearm licence at the material time and place.

No plea was taken from both accused.

Sessions Court Deputy Registrar Jason Juga fixed Nov 27 for the next mention of the case.
