MIRI: Twenty-two potential seamen have completed the General Purpose (GP) Rating Batch 04/2012 course undertaken by Pelita Maslaut Maritime Training Centre yesterday.

Barry Jime, a Kelabit, emerged as the best student while Steve Jalong Ulok, a Kenyah, emerged as potential student.

Pelita Maslaut Maritime Academy Group managing director Masni Amit said the academy was trying to produce as many local seamen through its programmes and courses.

“We are pleased to see many locals successful in becoming quality seamen and many are working for cargo vessels, oil and gas vessels and overseas tankers,” Masni said.

The last batch for this year’s GP Rating course will be next month and so far about 25 youths have signed up for the course, Masni added.

Youths interested in becoming seamen are urged to grab the opportunity to join the courses offered by the maritime academy.

“This is a good opportunity and jobs as seamen are available for youths after they have completed the course for eight months,” he elaborated.

Meanwhile, a student, Barry Jime said that he was pleased to have undertaken the course to equip himself to become a seaman.

He took up four modules during the course among which are Basic Safety Training and Tank Familiarisation.

He recommended school leavers to take up the course to be trained as seamen.

Sharing the same view, potential student Steve Jalong said the physical training and systematic learning gave him what were required to be a seaman.

“I’m happy to complete the course as it will be my ticket to be a seaman,” he said.
