HARRY REDKNAPP is heading back into football after answering an SOS from struggling QPR.

And he even hopes to be at Manchester United today to assess his new squad following Mark Hughes’ sacking yesterday, reports SunSport.

Redknapp, 65, told SunSport: “It is a challenge. The team is in a desperate situation. But if things are right with QPR it could be a good deal for everyone.”

The former Tottenham chief was last night putting the finishing touches on a deal to take charge at the Premier League’s bottom club.

Hughes failed to win a game in 12 attempts this season to leave QPR with just four points.

It is a similar scenario to when Redknapp took over at Spurs in 2008, then lifted the club to eighth in the table.

He was at home yesterday awaiting the nod to hold talks with representatives of chairman Tony Fernandes last night.

It is believed a two-year deal is on the cards and Redknapp insists it is down to the players to get the club out of the mire.

He said: “They have got to start performing. That’s what they’re paid to do. I’ve now got to get the best out of them.

“I wouldn’t expect too much to happen in January. They’ve got a big staff, they got about 12 players in over the summer and you can’t keep bringing in players.

“If we need to get a couple of loans or something then we’ll do that. We don’t need a massive spend-up.”

Redknapp, who helped perform the Great Escape with Portsmouth in 2006, insisted he is excited by the scale of the job at Loftus Road.

And he admitted he was close to becoming Ukraine’s coach.

Redknapp said: “It’s still the Premier League, a great league to be in. I was almost on my way to Ukraine.

“But this job changed everything around. My message to the QPR fans is that I will give it everything I’ve got — I can only do my best.”
