Sarawak athletes set 15 new records

KUCHING: Athletes from SMK Tabuan Jaya sports school set 15 new meet records to emerge overall champion in the recent 7th Ministry of Education (MoE) Inter-Sports Schools Track and Field Championship held in Melaka.

The school which represented Sarawak defended the title for the fourth consecutive time after bagging 22 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Terenganu Sports School finished second with 9 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals while Melaka Sports School trailed in third place.

Faradillah Raznie became the toast of SMK Tabuan Jaya after being adjudged as the Best Athlete in the Girls’ Under16 category after she rewrote three new meet records in the 400m race with 59.8s, 800m (2:25.2s) and 1,500m in 5:11.4s.

Other Sarawak’s athletes who set the other 12 records were Richard Stanley in the Boys’ Under16 long jump with a distance of 6.66m and Michelle Mangin in the Girls’ Under 16 in long jump with a distance of 5.56m.

Another state and national athlete, Norris Foo set new record in Girls’ Under14 100m sprint with a time of 12.25s, 100m hurdles in 15.2s, 200m in 25.9s.

Quek Lee Yong set a new record in the Boys Under 14 110m hurdles after clocking 14.7s while Willy Ampi Marcos set a new record in Boys’ Under16 110m hurdles with a new time of 14.5s.

The state Girls’ Under14 and Under16 relay teams also broke the meet’s records in the 4 X 100m with a new time of 51.3s and 4 X 400m 4:11.6s respectively.

SMK Tabuan Jaya’s principal Hassan Wa’ Gani who is also head of contingent attributed the school’s success to the athletes’ training and the coach’s close working relation with their parents.

“We usually hold interactive meetings with the coaching staff, athletes, parents and the purpose is to help parents understand how best to support their children’s sport participation and what constitutes appropriate parents’ behavior in their children sport environment for them to achieve success,” he said.

SMK Tabuan Jaya’s assistant team manager is Abdul Rashid Sabang and the chief coach is Rasia Lutang, assisted by Sharon Kezia Leela, Mohd Khairil Fitrie and Belun Saran.
