Six locals who went missing on kayaks rescued

RANAU: Six local men who have been reported missing while kayaking in Kampung Liwangan since Thursday were rescued by search and rescue personnel yesterday.

Mazlan Naimin, Jailin @ Nazrin Naimin, Chong Pitt Hong, Abdullah Keroon, Faznie Abdul Malik and Kilin were kayaking in the Liwangan River here and reported missing since November 22.

It is said that their kayak got stuck between the rocks and none of them managed to free the kayak.

Ranau police chief DSP Abdul Rahman Kassim said  search and rescue personnel rescued the six men around 2.10pm yesterday.

Abdul Rahman said the six men, together with two others, started their holiday trip from Kg Gana-Gana on Wednesday to Kg Nabutan.

However they stopped at Kg Liwangan for kayaking but six of them in a kayak did not return.

Their two friends immediately alerted the recreation management and a police report was lodged the same day.

Abdul Rahman said search operation was immediately carried out involving the Fire and Rescue Department from the scuba unit, the police, RELA and villagers.

He said around 2pm yesterday, the missing men were found and rescued and taken to a hospital at Kg Nabutan for outpatient treatment.

Abdul Rahman said the men were in good health and no unwanted incident was reported.
