GOOD EXTRA INCOME: Thomas unloads durians at Sibu Central market and makes good money as a side income in the current bumper season.

SIBU: The current durian season is giving youths who work as labourers a good opportunity to earn extra income by loading and unloading durians from express boats to Sibu Central Market.

Thomas Kam and his friends are definitely taking full advantage of the opportunity.

“This year’s season is very good as it provides us with handsome extra income because almost everyday durians arrive by express boats from Kapit, Song, Belaga and Kanowit.

“There are so many durians coming in daily that Sibu Central Market is being flooded with the king of the fruits,” he said at the market yesterday.

Thomas, 36, added that he has been working as a labourer since he was at a very young age.

“I love this job because it only needs physical strength.

“To sweat everyday as I carry the heavy loads helps to keep me healthy,” he said with a broad smile.

Thomas who comes from Kanowit with his catchy blonde-dyed ‘Mohican’ hair cut added that besides durians, it is also the dabai season.

In Sarawak the dabai fruits can only be found in the central region, he added.
