MIRI: A group of ex-teachers and students of SMK Marudi (formerly Marudi Government Secondary School) near here plan to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary on May 17 next year.

As such, the group came together and formed a protem committee during its first meeting last Sept 28 at Mega Hotel.

The organising committee will be lead by Dr Tie Yiu Liong as organising chairman and assisted by Francis King Chiu Tiong (deputy organsing chairman), Wong Hing Chai (vice organising chairman), Paul Hii (secretary), Koh Ek Chong (deputy secretary), Johnny Hii (treasurer), Wong Swee Ho (deputy treasurer) and Goh Swee Ngo and Lim Cheng Ling as members.

William Ng and Simon Daya would be advisors to the protem organising committee.

Dr Tie said the celebration will also serve as reunion for the school’s old boys.

“It will be a nostalgic moment when they walk down memory lane and reminisce about their lives as students in the school.

“They may perhaps give a thought or two on what they can do for their alma mater, which had nurtured them and paved their ways for higher education and subsequently, their careers.”

He said further that the committee had agreed to fix the celebration on May 17 next year.

“The organising committee will need all the help it can get so it welcomes as many ex-students and teachers to come forward and lend a helping hand.

“Many overseas ex-teachers, particularly the Peace Corps teachers, have indicated that they would come for the celebration.”

He called upon the school’s former students and teachers either in the state or overseas to come forward to make the celebration a success.

The committee therefore, needs a strong old-boy network to put the message across.

The school has a humble beginning and opened as the first government secondary school in Baram district (now Marudi district).

It had its first student intake in 1963, with two Form One classes and one transition class

The total number of students then was fewer than 100.

The first batch of Form Three students graduated in 1965, and they went to Miri to continue their study.

Form Four classes only started in 1967. Now, the school has grown to become one of the largest secondary schools in Sarawak with classes up to Form Six.
