Five perish, six hurt in road crash involving MPV, rice lorry

SLIM RIVER: Five people were killed and six others were hurt in an accident involving a Multi-purpose Vehicle (MPV) and a lorry at KM 372.1 North-South Expressway near Slim River toll plaza at 7am yesterday.

The dead were Poh Hock Huat,60, and Juvien Chim Yu Xuan, 12, of Taman Transkrian, Nibong Tebal, Penang, Pang Lee Si, 35, of Taman Serdang, Serdang, Kedah and Daphine Eng Yuik Yee, 14, of Bagan Selatan, Butterworth, Penang, and Hong Choon Tee, 33, of Prai, Penang.

The five were among 11 passengers of the Hyundai Starex (MPV) travelling from Parit Buntar to perform in Muar, Johor.

Tanjung Malim deputy police chief DSP R Supramaniam said the MPV crashed into the rear of the 12-tonne lorry laden with rice parked in the emergency lane.

“The driver had just parked the lorry which had a flat tyre and did not have time to place a cone to warn motorists. The lorry was on its way from Jitra, Kedah to Sungai Buloh, Selangor,” he told reporters at Tanjung Malim district police headquarters here yesterday.

The injured were Bu Wei Hong, 58, and Heng Ah Lee,60, of Bagan Selatan Butterworth, Penang.

They lost a lot of blood and were treated at Slim River Hospital.

Chong Soon Choy, 61, of Taman Desa Damai, Bukit Mertajam, Penang and Lim Tau Hong,5, were treated at the orthopedic and paediatric ward of the same hospital.

Two other passengers, Ho Seok Yi, 18, of Batu 14, Telok Medan, Bagan Serai, Perak and Goey Wen Ni, 16, of Taman Nibong Tebal Jaya, Penang were sent home after treatment as out-patient. — Bernama
