1M’sia group from UMS for peak of Mt Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will become the first higher learning institution in the country to have students and staff wearing traditional costumes of different ethnic groups in the state at the peak of Mt. Kinabalu.

Members of the 30-member team from the university will be clad in 20 diffferent traditional costumes of the Suluk, Rungus, Murut, Bajau, Tidong, Melanau, Kadazan Papar, Kokos, Lotud and Kadazan Penampang during the event dubbed ‘1Malaysia Di Puncak Gunung Kinabalu’ (1Malaysia at the Peak of Mt Kinabalu).

The event is aimed at promoting Malaysia’s multicultural diversity and unity, said the programme director, Mohd Hafizi Nurodin, who was represented by the programme secretary, Porlla Mousin.

The event, themed ‘Know Your Origin’, is also aimed at elevating and protecting the cultural heritage of our ancestors, he said.

Meanwhile, UMS deputy vice chancellor (HEPA) Professor Madya Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur said the event will provide a platform for students to learn and love the local traditions and culture.
