Cheating just a phone call away, three victims lose RM332,000 in a month

SIBU: The police here have found that cheating has become an easy crime to commission – it’s just a telephone call away.

Three cases with similar modus operandi have occurred here in a month, causing the victims to suffer losses totalling RM332,000.

In the latest report earlier this week, a clerk in her 40s said she had received a call from a man who identified himself as a bank officer.

The caller said the woman’s bank account was no longer safe as there had been a defraud attempt.

He said her credit card with the bank was already in trouble, as the record showed she had spent a large amount on purchases.

The caller advised her to transfer her savings to another account, and the caller gave her an account number.

To convince her, the caller asked the woman to check with the court in Sibu, as the bank had already sued her for credit card debt.

The woman was frightened, and without verification, she transferred all her savings amounting to RM80,000 to another account.

Only after the transfer did she check with the court and found out that she had been conned.

In the other two cases this month, the victims lost cash amounting to RM240,000 and RM12,000 each.
