WOMEN have achieved numerous successes through the various programmes drawn up for them under the Barisan Nasional (BN) government helmed by Umno, said Wanita Umno head Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil yesterday.
In her policy speech at the Wanita Umno General Assembly 2012, here, she blasted at the opposition pact which was just ‘waddling’ to introduce initiatives for women in the country.
“Sorry to say, it was only this year that the opposition pact plans to launch its agenda for Malaysian women. Forget it. All of you are ahead, they (the opposition) are 66 years behind time,” she said. In her speech entitled “Umno’s Future”, Shahrizat pointed out that Wanita Umno, through its struggles, had paved the way for women to be more involved in various sectors such as politics, the economy, social and professional.
However, besides the numerous successes achieved by the movement, she said Wanita Umno should take several measures to reinvent its struggles including strengthening solidarity as Umno was making preparations to face the looming general election.
Shahrizat said the results of the last general election had provided a good lesson and a ‘wake-up call’ for Umno and the BN so that they would no longer be complacent in the face of the political challenge.
As such, she urged Wanita Umno members to unite, struggle for the sake of principles and to inculcate the spirit of mutual trust. — Bernama
