MTA 2013 events planned out

SIBU: Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA) encourages its state affiliates to stage at least five events in their next year calendar of events and activities.

MTA secretary-general Eddie Tuan said the association had planned out its 2013 calendar and is expecting affiliates throughout the nation to follow suit.

According to him, taekwondo ought to be made a popular sport for the people to keep fit and healthy.

“This is in line with our effort to bring taekwondo towards achieving greater height,” he said during the recent visit to Sibu.

He said many basic training courses were in the pipeline which should provide beginners a good head-start in their involvement in taekwondo.

“There are also coaching clinics for the senior and the instructors, championships of various levels, etc,” said Eddie who also called on the senior members to impart their knowledge to the juniors.

During his visit to Sibu, he was accompanied by MTA national technical director Peter Kang Teong Kheng and first vice president Dr Henry Toh.

Meanwhile, 18 senior members of Sarawak Taekwondo Federation (STF) took part in an upgrading test held at the federation training centre recently.

The upgrading test was conducted jointly by Eddie Tuan and, Peter Kang. They were assisted by Dr Henry Toh, MTA chief instructor for East Malaysia.

Kang who is a 8th Dan black belt holder advised the black belt holders to continue strive for excellence in practising the basics of the Korean art of self-defence.

He said MTA is now recognised and authorised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the Education Ministry to promote Taekwondo among schools, universities and colleges nationwide. Kang also announced Dr Toh, a pioneer of WTF taekwondo especially in Sarawak, was promoted to the 8th Dan.

Among those who sat for the 7th Dan test were former national and international exponent Pang Ming Sing, Kiew Shyh Yong, Boniface James and Edward Subeng Stephen.
