KOTA KINABALU: Mohd Saiful Mohd Alias is excited over the prospect of starting his career in the hospitality industry in Pulau Tioman.

The 24-year-old from Papar was ‘head hunted’ by the Tunamaya Beach and Spa Resort while undergoing a three-month hospitality course.

Mohd Saiful who together with Raindey Roslee from Ranau are recipients of the Ascot Academy’s 1Azam Khidmat course’s Best Student Award in Housekeeping Training.

The two boys are part of the 57 students in the third batch of the course conducted by Ascot Academy.

Raindey was unable to attend the graduation ceremony yesterday as he and nine other course mates have accepted job offers in Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside Resort and have flown to the federal capital.

According to Mohd Saiful, he does not have much work experience as he had only worked as a telephone technician.

“I decided to take up Ascot Academy’s offer because I wanted to try something new that can improve my life. I also know that I can progress further in the hospitality industry,” he said.

His course mate Eva Susyantie Yunus from Tamparuli said she did not have any idea what the hospitality industry was all about before she accepted Ascot Academy’s offer.

Eva, who with Constantine Aidi from Tambunan, was the recipients of the Best Students in Front Office Operations Training Award said she was initially not interested in the course but decided to give it a try because she wanted to try something new.

As the course progressed, she found that she had a knack for front office operations and her skills caught the eye of the Gayana Eco Resort management, prompting them to offer her a job.

Both students said they will strive to do their best in performing their new-found jobs and work hard to improve so that they can go further in their career.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Peter Pang En Yin in his speech at the graduation ceremony, congratulated Ascot Academy for making the main objective of the course a reality.

“I want to thank Ascot Academy and congratulate you for a job well done in implementing the 1Azam program for the Youth and Sports Ministry. My appreciation and gratitude also goes to the hospitality industry for giving the students the opportunity to do their practical training at their premises,” he said.

In his speech which was delivered by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Datuk Suzannah Liaw, Pang urged the students to make full use of the opportunity provided to them to improve their as well as their family’s standard of living.

“For those of you who are working, show a high commitment, be positive and loyal to the hospitality industry no matter where you are employed,” he said, adding that the Government has provided various forms of assistance to help those in the hardcore poor category improve their living standard.

Pang said if the assistance was not fully utilized, the target group will remain under the poverty level.
