KOTA KINABALU: An ambulance driver was fined RM4,500 or in default four months’ jail by the Traffic’s Court here for careless and inconsiderate driving which resulted in an accident last year.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus yesterday imposed the fine on Mohd Anuar Abd Rahman, 51, after the latter pleaded guilty to the offence.

Mohd Anuar admitted to driving the vehicle without due care and consideration at the traffic lights at Terminal 1 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here about 10.30am on March 3, 2011.

He was convicted under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a fine of between RM4,000 and RM10,000 and would also liable to a jail term of up to 12 months upon conviction.

The facts of the case stated that accused, who drove an ambulance, was involved in an accident with a lorry while travelling towards the airport from Putatan.

Investigation revealed that the lorry had proceeded towards the airport when the traffic light turned green at that time but was rammed by the ambulance.

Further investigation showed that the incident occurred as a result of the accused’s inconsiderate and careless driving.

In pleading for leniency, the accused informed the court that at that time he was on official duty to escort the Deputy Prime Minister.

He admitted to having driven the car in a hurry because he was already late going to his destination.

Mohd Anuar pointed out that he is still a civil servant and has to take care of his children.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat meanwhile applied for an appropriate sentence to be imposed on the accused as a lesson to him taking into consideration the facts of the case and what the accused had told the court.

The accused paid the fine.
