KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom yesterday suggested that agencies enforcing syariah laws focus more on prevention of syariah related crimes rather than on the laws per se and punishment.

He said this would be seen as more effective and also reflect the beauty of Islam besides neutralising public perception that the syariah courts and Islamic enforcement agencies are only bent on punishing people.

“Prevention through campaigns that are educational so that Muslims do not stray should be maximised as much as possible as compared to just handing down punishment to offenders,” he told the media after officiating the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Crime Prevention Campaign at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza (Northbound) here yesterday.

Also present were Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) director Datuk Che Mat Che Ali, Malaysia Syariah Judiciary Department director-general Tan Sri Ibrahim Lembut and Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general Datuk Othman Mustapha.

Jamil Khir said the agencies and parties involved also needed to come out of traditional mediums like mosques and suraus and instead explore new avenues to spread the message.

By doing this, he said, they would be able to reach a wider audience, like the campaign launched yesterday.

At the event, Jamil Khir also distributed kits on the campaign to the agencies that took part as well as campaign stickers to 20 taxi operators operating in the Klang Valley to be fixed on their taxis.

Among the agencies involved were the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), Jakim, PLUS Malaysia Berhad, the health, welfare and immigration departments of the federal capital and the Royal Malaysia Police’s Counselling Division. — Bernama
